The FibroScan has replaced the liver biopsy as the best method of determining liver fibrosis. It is a very effective tool to measure the liver Fibrosis (Scarring) and Steatosis (fatty liver) in a non-invasive way.
It’s a specialised ultrasound machine for your liver. The technology is called VCTE (Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography). It sends a low-frequency sound wave (called a shear wave) through the liver.
The major advantage is that the scan is a quick and painless way to assess the liver.
The FibroScan is included in all the international guidelines such as the EASL (European Association of the study of the liver) AASLD (American Association of the study of the liver), WHO, Asian Pacific association, UK Nice guidelines, French guidelines AFEF and many others.
